Lakeside Patio Design: Sun City
There’s plenty of room for a gathering in this Sun City backyard now, and built-in seating at docking level too. Given a few years of growth, the newly installed trees, shrubs, cacti, and succulents will fill in to nicely soften all the paving.
At first glance, it may look like this patio design was installed using standard pavers. It’s just a trick of the sunlight, this is actually natural stone travertine pavers. Some days the Valley sun is incredibly bright, and washes out color and pattern in photos. Look closely, and you’ll see that there are no two pavers alike. Some are very different colored from the rest, but this is to be expected from real stone. Concrete paver manufacturing tries to mimic this varying quality, but Nature does it best.
Living on the lake means spending every minute outside that you can, and these homeowners will enjoy many hours on this lakeside patio every year. Travertine is light enough to reflect the sun’s heat, yet colorful in a way that is hard to improvise using any other paving material. It also has a chameleon-like personality that allows it to work anywhere. It fits beautifully into any setting from rustic to modern, and from casual to formal.
